What does a fire extinguisher achieve?

Fire classes describe the combustible substance, not the extinguisher. Every extinguisher is approved for one or more fire classes — a wrong choice can be life-threatening (example: water on a fat fire).

The fire extinguisher is the first line of defence against the incipient fire. A functional extinguisher, correctly selected and in the right place, can prevent a small fire from becoming a large one — many commercial fires are decided in the first three minutes. Which extinguisher type goes where, how many are needed and at what distance — this is regulated by the Workplace Rule ASR A2.2 via so-called extinguishing rating units (LE). Depending on floor area and fire risk, the total count is calculated. In homes there is no legal duty, but a strong recommendation. Businesses are obliged (§ 10 ArbSchG, DGUV 205-023) to additionally appoint and train fire wardens regularly. Testing is in accordance with the applicable proofs of usability at least every two years — stored-pressure extinguishers often require servicing or replacement after 10 years. We advise on selection (fire class, quantity, position), supply manufacturer-independent, test and document — and on request train your fire wardens.

ASolidsWood, paper, textiles, plastics — typical home, office, warehouse. Covered by powder, foam and water extinguishers.
BLiquidsOils, petrol, paints, alcohol — workshops, petrol stations, labs. Covered by powder, foam and CO₂ extinguishers.
CGasesPropane, butane, acetylene — petrol stations, industry. Only ABC-powder extinguishers are suitable.
DMetalsAluminium, magnesium, lithium — metal businesses, battery storage. Special metal-fire extinguisher required.
FEdible fatsDeep fryers, pans — catering and large kitchens. Only approved fat-fire extinguishers may be used (no water!).

Powder, foam, CO₂, water — the right choice by use.

Which variant fits depends on the installation context, the existing building and the fire-protection concept — we advise per project.
